Love the book. Hate the quality I love that Todd has written a book, and the format is so clever. However, the publication quality is abysmal. For whatever reason, the text doesn't appear to have been edited/proofed, and it contains a plethora of typos, misspellings, type-setting errors, etc. The pages, slick and shiny, are not pleasant to read or handle. The binding threatens to separate from the pages at any moment. I don't think the publisher took this work seriously, but we fans do, and we (and Tood) deserve far better. I'd still recommend the book to all Todd fans; others probably wouldn't "get it."Review of THE INDIVIDUALIST in three paragraphs (after the style of The Individualist). I placed my order with Amazon as soon as I heard about the book. They told me it was on back order and wouldn't be here until late January, but I got a nice Christmas surprise and here it is. The book is printed on heavy glossy paper with a stitched spine and no apparent manufacturing flaws. The color photos are precisely registered. This is a collector-worthy product. All the photos are collected in the back, almost as an appendix. My favorites are 1) the Olan Mills baby portrait of Liv, 2) the paired shots of Harry holding baby Todd in the palm of his hand and Todd holding his own son in the same manner and 3) Todd's smile posing with Freddie Mercury. We all know that the book is written in episodic form without salacious details. You might call it a plot-driven narrative of the moments in Todd's life that interested him. I am grateful that someone took the time to edit these vignettes in terms of standard English, as there are precious few usage errors.I love the 3-paragraph structure. In my years of teaching composition, this is exactly what I tried to drill into my students as the format of their essays: 1) Write what you experienced with your senses, 2) Write what you felt about what you experienced, 3) Write what you learned from your feelings and experiences. For 20+ years I have been teaching this and to have TR adopt this methodology gives me a great sense of satisfaction. His strength is in the first paragraph. He has a keen eye and good memory for detail. If he had been one of my students, we would have worked a little harder of the other two paragraphs. Those are often unsatisfactory, either hurried or deliberately truncated or obfuscated to preserve his deeper feelings.I learned that Todd is a Real Man, beyond the snapshots we get of him through interviews, songs, and stage persona. I was surprised at his vulnerability. We often hear "Todd is God," and of course we know he isn't but I have often put him in the category of an advanced human who has perhaps transcended most mortal afflictions by the sheer power of his talent and intellect. This book tells me, "Not so fast." He was deeply hurt by Bebe Buell and one senses that he may never be shed of the scars. The depth of his animus there is kind of surprising. But it's real.True Todd Rundgren style He's always done things in his own style - from writing music, recording, producing, touring and now writing his autobiography. It's a wonderful insight into his thoughts and lessons from as early as he can remember to age 50. He is truly a gifted writer and any fan of music will enjoy this book!
