I’ve read – and listened to – many of Chamberlain’s earlier books over the years, and I always have an eye out for her new releases. Like many of her novels, this one has a modern storyline (2014) with Molly and her husband going through the process of adopting a baby and a storyline in Molly’s past (starting in 1990) that gives more background on the secrets Molly has kept hidden for all of these years. It’s a very engaging read, with a lot of information on adoption, MS and of course, Chamberlain’s always realistic and authentic feeling characters. Like all of her novels, this one too expertly tugs at your heartstrings as the pages fly by! It’s an enjoyable read and while I do love all of her books, this one is certainly up there with my favorites of hers! I already can’t wait to see what she writes next!
Pretending to Dance was an amazing story. Taking place during two pivotal times in Molly’s life, we uncover her past as she tries to come to terms with it in her future. The summer of Molly 14th year was the one that changed her life forever. Molly experienced so many changes in her life that year that stay with her for the rest of her life. It was a summer full of fun and tragedy, and it haunts her still. This summer is beautifully told and at times it seems like such a magical time of discovery for her.
In the present, Molly has lied about her past and her family to everyone. As she gets ready to adopt a child, she begins to re-visit her past more and more, terrified that it will somehow come out and ruin her chances. Her struggle with this is very real. As the adoption itself begins to falter, she goes into a downward spiral both mentally and physically.I learned so much about open adoption, the pitfalls and the joys. It is such a different process than I had ever imagined.
Her present and past come to a head when she is forced to face her past and address what happened there. While she finds a little of what she expected, things weren’t quite as she had thought. And so much has changed since then that it’s almost unrecognizable.
This was a beautiful story of a family’s love and the things a family may be willing to do to help the children. I think this is a must read for readers of all sorts. There are so many very special elements that you will find a way to connect to the characters and their lives.

Oh my. I fell completely in awe and wonder and maybe a little bit “in love” with Graham’s character. He is the therapist-father of the main character, Molly. A warm, loving human being to all who knew him, also a victim of Multiple Sclerosis, which of course is not what defines him, but is a major factor in the basis of this novel. We are told this story from two time frames, when Molly was 14 in the summer of 1990, and in current day as an adult in 2014. I found the former story more compelling than the latter, but it lays the groundwork for what makes Molly, the adult, tick. I will say that she disappointed me at times as an adult, but that’s a very human trait. How many of us can say we’ve never disappointed anyone? Life lessons.
There is so much to say about this, but I’ll let you, dear reader, find out for yourself. It touches on many topics; relationships between daughter/father, mother/daughter, biological parents/adoptive parents, and then there is the BIG topic, “dying with dignity.” How much love does it take to let someone go? This unique family showed love for each other in many ways, reading together, dancing together, but what warmed my heart most was when Molly and her Dad sang together, and the music they chose. I wanted to sing right along with them, knowing the songs they were singing. Music was what helped them cope, even when they felt they couldn’t be lifted, they sang or danced anyway, and chased the blues away, if only for a few minutes, and a few smiles.
Don’t hesitate to read this. Yes, there is a secret or two, and it takes place in locales she has written about before, but it is totally unlike anything she has written in the past. Each of her novels is unique and this is no exception, with well-fleshed out characters that you will enjoy meeting and thinking of long after you close the cover on the last page.
